Thoughts On Thoughts

What to do when you need to Think by Carmen Wilkinson

Maybe you have had one of those moments when you are confused and don’t know what to do. You are in a season where right is left and left is sideways and everything in between is like cold oatmeal. You may be facing a daunting task or have a big nosed coworker who is petty and messy. Who knows besides you what you are dealing with. You look at your checkbook and your gaslight and a vacation is the thing you need the most but the last thing in your budget.

It is during these moments you have thoughts on top of thoughts on top of thoughts. It is vital to your very existence that you take some time and get away. You don’t have to book a vacation, you don’t even have to book a room at your local hotel.

Grab you a notebook, a pen and some lunch. If you can’t afford a ten dollar lunch make yourself a sandwich and pack a thermos of water. Go to a park or a library or somewhere you can be alone with your thoughts. You may even just want to sit in your own back yard. Whatever it is or wherever it is, find you a place. Somewhere you can feel the wind or hear water. Water has always been the place I find the most solitude.

Once you have located ‘your place’ then sit down and write some of those thoughts down on paper. Write what is going on, how you feel about it. What can you do to change it. Once you have identified how you can change the situation then write out a goal and set up a time frame. Maybe you don’t need to change anything. Maybe you just need a moment to not do anything but relax. Maybe you just need peace and quiet with nature and a good cup of coffee. Everyone has their own thing. Taking time to be alone with your thoughts is a good opportunity to refresh your spirit. It’s like taking a shower after working in the yard under the hot sun all day.

If you take the time to make the time for yourself, then perhaps you will see your thoughts a lot more clear. The cold oatmeal will melt like butter and the weather vane will stop spinning. Another good idea is to take down some notes on some of the positive things in your life. Even if you are worrying excessively over something that seems out of your control. Write down things you have that you are proud of and thankful for. Read that list out loud to yourself. Take the time to smell more than the roses, take a breathe of life and enjoy the moment.
